INDIANAPOLIS — We always warn that weather doesn't follow calendars and more proof of that will be the weather pattern expected over the weekend into next week. After some locally-dense fog Friday morning, we're expecting a brightening sky heading into Friday afternoon and what becomes another pleasant evening for Operation Football Friday.

That begins a long streak of mainly sunny days and warming temperatures. Average highs this weekend are in the lower 70s for late September and the open of October. We're forecasting highs in the mid-80s with abundant sunshine for more an August feel as the new month begins.

The modeled pattern next week is highly conducive to promote well above average temperatures. It's called an "Omega Block", due to its shape of the Greek letter Omega. It's created by an upper-level high pressure center in between to troughs.

The "block" portion of the pattern name comes from it blocking the upper level flow and keeping the weather in any given place mainly uniform for several days. In this case for central Indiana that daily weather next week will be hazy sunshine and summer-like high temperatures in the mid/upper 80s. High pressure from the upper levels causes subsidence (sinking air) that keeps the sky mainly cloud-free and causes the air to warm additionally through compression as it sinks.

Some days next week could near daily record highs. Either way, temperatures will be a good 15 degrees above average and make it a hot start for October. Often, when October begins hot like this, it can end abruptly in a temperature pendulum in the opposite direction. We'll need to monitor for the possibility of much below average air mid-month.

Stay tuned for updates.
