INDIANAPOLIS — While winter looms on and the average high temperature continues to drop (36 degrees as of Jan. 2), we can look forward to daylight hours growing longer. 

Today's sunrise was at 8:05 a.m., and the sun will set at 5:30 p.m.. This allows for 9 hours and 25 minutes of daylight, even though we won't see much of the sun today due to cloudy skies.

By the end of the month, we will add 45 minutes of daylight, with a total of 10 hours and 10 minutes and a new sunrise time of 7:53 a.m. and sunset of 6:02 p.m.

Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10. By this time of the season, we'll see a total of 11 hours and 45 minutes of daylight, which is 2 hours and 20 minutes more than today. Remember, we will spring forward one hour, so the new sunrise will be at 8:03 a.m., and sunset will be pushed back to 7:46 p.m.

The day with the most daylight falls on the summer solstice, which is June 20 this year. Daylight time peaks at 15 hours that day, which is an additional 5 hours and 35 minutes more than we see on Jan. 2.
