INDIANAPOLIS — A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect today from 10 a.m. through 9 p.m. as an impactful storm system brings our first accumulating snow this month into central Indiana. Temperatures will hold steady in the low 30s this afternoon, conducive to this frozen precipitation-type. Plan ahead for deteriorating road conditions this afternoon through the early evening during the late-day rush hour or if you're planning to head downtown for NBA All-Star Weekend festivities.
Latest timeline
Snow will become widespread across the northern tier of the state by the mid-morning as snow bands will continue to set up across central and southern Indiana this afternoon. Drier air will move in this evening, mainly after 7 p.m., and cut off the snow machine from north to south by 10 p.m.
Where the heaviest of the snow bands set up, we'll likely see the highest snowfall potential in the 2"-4" range. This extends from the Lafayette-Kokomo-Muncie line north and the Sullivan-Bloomington-Columbus line south. Keep in mind that this will be a rather wet snow and compacting is likely to occur.
As colder, drier air takes over during the overnight hours, temperatures will fall into the teens, with wind chill values dropping to 1 to 5 across central Indiana by Saturday morning. While sunshine returns to start the weekend, the cold air will continue to dominate as air temperatures only recover to the upper 20s.
After another cold morning, temperatures will begin to recover Sunday as winds shift to the southwest and gust up to 30 mph at times. Look for highs in the low to mid-40s under a sunny sky.
Temperatures continue to trend upward through next weekend, with highs back in the 50s and pushing 60 by Thursday. We're mainly dry as well, with the exception of rain shower chances on Thursday.
