INDIANAPOLIS — It's quite a streak of April weather we're currently experiencing in central Indiana. Sunshine, a balmy southwest wind, and high temperatures in the 75-80-degree range are expected today into Saturday afternoon.
The biggest complaints at this time are the very high pollen levels that won't change until a cold front crosses the state Sunday morning. If you suffer from allergies, there's no doubt you're feeling these numbers.
Another fly-in-the-ointment is poor air quality. Not so much during the afternoons, but with a lighter wind and nightly temperature inversions (warmer air aloft above cooler air near the surface), there will be high accumulation of particulates near ground level early in the morning. Today, the AQI reached 156 for a time in Indianapolis — that's unhealthy for all groups. It can impact those exercising outside and/or groups with sensitive respiratory systems.
Early June-like weather hangs strong in the coming days with our next chance of rain not arriving until Friday afternoon. This comes from an upper level disturbance moving north from the Gulf of Mexico. At this time, we're advertising rain odds around 30% later Friday.
That upper low keeps a chance around Saturday too. But the greatest coverage of rain, and possibly thunderstorms, comes Saturday night into early Sunday morning with an approaching cold front.
This front snaps the mild streak and knocks highs into the 40s/50s Sunday and keeps them in the 50s Monday. Normally, that wouldn't be a big deal, but it will certainly feel much colder after the warm streak we're in now.
