INDIANAPOLIS — The first significant snowfall of this year is here and bringing up to an inch for most of central Indiana, and up to two inches in Indy Saturday.
Watch for slick roads this morning as temperatures drop below freezing causing a wintry mix. It will change to bursts of steady snow from around 5-10 a.m.
There have been multiple reports of stop lights down and cars drifting in the road so make sure to drive safe.
Most of the snow is expected to melt this afternoon under cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 30s. Another wave of light rain and snow is on the way later tonight into early Sunday with another coating of snow possible.
Winter storm updates:
- 3:58 a.m. - Exit ramp from I-70 westbound to I-465 southbound, near mile-marker 90, closed due to a semi crash.
- 5:02 a.m. - IMPD reports a car slid off the road at the intersection of North Raceway Road and West 10th Street.
- 5:33 a.m. - IMPD report four different crashes within 20 minutes.
- 5:38 a.m. - All lanes of State Road 37 at 1000 East in Montgomery County are closed to recover a vehicle in a ditch.
- 6:18 a.m. - IMPD reports another car slid off the road at the intersection of Burdsal parkway and Rader Street.
- 7:00 a.m. - The National Weather Service of Indianapolis announces 1.9 inches of snow fell in downtown Indianapolis.
- 7:01 a.m. - IMPD reports another car slid off the road at the intersection of Salem Creek Boulevard and West Morris Street.
Central Indiana was hit with the second snowiest calendar day in history with 11.4 inches.
Indianapolis reported its coldest air since January 1994 with temperatures in the negative teens and wind chills dropping into the -40s at times for 30 straight hours.
A travel ban was issued by Mayor Ballard.
