LOUISVILLE, Ky. — At least eight tornadoes have touched down since Tuesday’s severe weather outbreak in Kentucky and Indiana.
According to the National Weather Service, EF-1 tornadoes have been confirmed in Nelson, Anderson, Bourbon, Henry, Clark and Jessamine counties in Kentucky.
One short-lived tornado touched down in Corydon, Indiana. Another tornado also crossed the Ohio River from Jeffersonville, Indiana and into Prospect, Kentucky.
NWS crews are still assessing damage across Kentucky and Indiana to determine how many tornadoes occurred.
Gov. Andy Beshear’s office has confirmed damage reported in multiple Kentucky counties including Fayette (Lexington), Jefferson (Louisville), Woodford, Powell and Union.
The governor had already declared a state of emergency and activated the State Emergency Operations Center.
Beshear said verbal disaster declarations have been received from Bourbon, Clark, Elliott, Jessamine and Kenton Counties.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has reminded everyone to be careful, especially around downed powerlines.
Should you encounter them on roadways, here are some helpful tips:
- Never touch or driver over a fallen power line. You should report it immediately to the power company.
- Do not drive through standing water if downed lines are in the water.
- Stay inside your vehicle if a line has fallen on your car; the ground could be energized. Sound the horn, call for help, then call 911.
- Assume all downed power lines are live and do not attempt to move one, even with non-conductive materials like wood or cloth.
