Northwestern Indiana woman killed, tens of thousands without power after strong storms move through overnight

Strong to severe storms rolled across parts of Indiana early Tuesday.

INDIANAPOLIS — As the severe weather threat increased, most of central Indiana was under a severe thunderstorm watch until early Tuesday morning.

All local severe weather watches and warnings were allowed to expire for central Indiana as we head into Tuesday morning, but scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to impact the area through the morning hours.

8:45 a.m. - A woman in northwestern Indiana died after a tree fell onto a home, authorities said.

The 44-year-old woman died Monday night in Cedar Lake, Indiana, the Lake County Coroner's Office said.

Storms spawning multiple tornado reports blew through Iowa, Illinois and Indiana on Monday, downing trees and power poles and cutting power to more than 460,000 customers and businesses.

7:50 a.m. - AES Indiana reports roughly 6,000 customers without power, while Duke Energy reports roughly 7,800 outages across the state and Indiana Michigan Power reports around 20,000.

4:58 a.m. - All lanes of eastbound Interstate 465 near Keystone Avenue on Indianapolis' north side have reopened after a closure due to a downed powerlines during the storms.

3:49 a.m. - All lanes of eastbound Interstate 465 remain blocked near Keystone Avenue on Indianapolis' north side due to downed powerlines. 

3:46 a.m. - At 3:45 a.m., AES Indiana reports roughly 7,500 customers without power. Duke Energy reports around 16,500 customers without power throughout the state, while Indiana Michigan Power's number stands at over 26,500.

3:44 a.m. - All local severe weather watches and warnings were allowed to expire for central Indiana. There are still scattered showers and thunderstorms that will impact the area through the morning hours, Live Doppler 13 meteorologist Lindsey Monroe says, and some of the storms may pack a punch. 1:47 a.m. - Traffic is stopped in all lanes of eastbound I-465 around Keystone Avenue because of downed power lines. Police are diverting traffic at Meridian Street.

1:34 a.m. - The latest reports from the National Weather Service indicate a falling tree damaged a house in the Tipton area early Tuesday, shingles were damaged and tree limbs fell just northwest of Kokomo and power lines were reported down in Peru.

1:22 a.m.  - AES reports 3926 customers without power.

1:14 a.m. - 19,509 Indiana Michigan Power customers are currently without power.

1:11 a.m. - Duke Energy says 25,613 customers are currently without power.

1:09 a.m. - A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for a large portion of Central Indiana until 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

12:52 a.m. - Thousands of customers were without power early Tuesday after strong storms and gusty winds rolled through.

12:19 a.m. - Meteorologist Sean Ash says strong winds have moved into parts of Clinton and Boone counties.

11:51 p.m. - The National Weather Service says a couple of trees were reported down in the vicinity of Purdue University in West Lafayette.
