Local disaster declaration issued after storms damage Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY, Ind. — A local disaster emergency was declared for Monroe County Tuesday after severe storms blew through the county earlier in the day.

The storms blew through the state between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., with winds near 80 mph reported in Monroe County. Damage included downed trees and debris scattered on roadways. Some damage was reported on the west side of Bloomington and near the Indiana University campus.

At 11 p.m. Tuesday, Duke Energy still reported about 45,000 customers without power, a number that has remained fairly consistent since the storms blew through.

The local disaster emergency declared by the Monroe County Board of Commissioners is in effect for seven days.

Emergency management officials ask anyone in the county who was impacted by the storm who needs shelter contact them by calling 812-349-2546 or emailing justinbaker@co.monroe.in.us.
