INDIANA, USA — The heat came well before summer officially started, but now that the season is here, there may be some intensification of the heat for the first weekend of summer. The center of high pressure is strengthening. That will help block cold fronts for a few more days, allowing the heat to go up the rest of the week.

There will be a chance for some days of slightly cooler weather next week, thanks to a light northwest wind at times. Even a small change in wind direction can make a big difference in how hot it feels.

Turning up the heat

We are tracking the heat stress, or the intensity of the heat on the human body, very closely. It's a combination of air temperature, humidity, wind, and sun intensity. The heat stress will likely go up Friday and Saturday. On Sunday it will be higher in the morning but by the afternoon, a very weak front will arrive, taking a tiny bit of the edge off the heat.

Rain chances ahead

When you don't have a cold front on the way, sometimes the only way to cool off this time of year is to get a good downpour. During this quick heat-up, the rain chances look very low across Indiana. There may be an isolated storm in extreme northern and extreme southern Indiana. However most of Indiana will stay dry.

Next week there will be more rain chances. The high pressure will be breaking back down slightly, and moving a bit farther south and east. This should help open Indiana up more for on-and-off storm chances. A couple weak cold fronts may be able to sneak in as well.

After some isolated rain and storms Sunday, the highest rain chance will be the middle of next week. A stronger front should arrive, bringing some northerly winds to help drop the humidity and heat a bit later next week.

Any cool downs that arrive will likely be short-lived. A few days of some nicer weather are possible, but this summer is looking hot and humid most of the time, as it usually does.
