Floodwaters receding from Bloomington streets after heavy rain overnight

Videos from Kirkwood Avenue near the Indiana University campus showed cars nearly covered by rising waters.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Relentless heavy rain brought on by waves of storms through the state flooded streets and buildings in Bloomington Friday night.

Videos shared on social media showed floodwaters taking over the streets near the Indiana University campus, nearly covering cars and patio tables at establishments on Kirkwood Avenue.

Several videos were shared from Kilroy's on Kirkwood, where water was seen flowing onto the floor of the bar.

By Saturday morning, the water had receded and businesses were starting to reopen along Kirkwood Avenue. Near the Sample Gate entrance to the Indiana University campus, businesses did not see as much flooding as those in lower areas.

A Flash Flood Warning was in effect for Bloomington and surrounding areas until 4:30 a.m. Flood warnings have also been issued overnight for Nashville and Seymour.

The National Weather Service reminded Hoosiers who are driving overnight to use extra care around wet roads that may have flooded during the rain. The severity of flooding can be difficult to see in the dark,

"DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH FLOOD WATERS," the service warned on Twitter.

The heavy rains started Friday afternoon as storms that brought high winds and large hail to parts of the state roared through central Indiana. A tornado touched down in Jay County, destroying several buildings.

The chance of storms continues through the weekend into Monday before things dry out for a few days.
