Morning wind chill values have dropped below -30 in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — An arctic high pressure system has moved into the region bringing a blast of dangerously cold air. Morning wind chill values have dropped below -30 in Indiana, but are as cold as -40 from Iowa into the northern plains states.

Several counties across west central and northern Indiana have been upgraded to a Wind Chill Warning that will be in effect through 1 p.m. Frostbite could occur within 30 minutes on exposed skin with these dangerous wind chill values. You should also limit outdoor time, wear extra layers and bring pets inside. The rest of the state remains under a Wind Chill Advisory through Monday morning

Air temperatures today remain in the single digits with the "warmest" wind chill values near -7 as the winds ease a bit in the afternoon and evening. Given lingering clouds and the cold air mass, a few flurries will be possible throughout the day.

The core of this arctic cold continues to push south across the eastern U.S. through the first part of next week keeping brutal cold air around.

We're once again looking at dangerously cold wind chills Monday morning dropping to -25 to -15 and air temps near 0. Most of our MLK Day will be spent in the single digits with highs only rebounding to near 13. With the exception of an occasional snow shower, we stay mainly dry. Tuesday will be nearly the same with morning wind chills near -15 and highs near 13 in the afternoon.

Temperatures get moderate a bit by mid-week with highs in the mid 20s Wednesday. Thursday will be the closest day we get to seeing the freezing mark with highs in the upper 20s, but this is as our next storm system brings more snow chances. Scattered snow will again be possible Friday as cold air returns.

Temperatures drop into the teens on Friday with bitter air lingering through next weekend with highs in the teens and 20s. It is still looking like central Indiana won't get back above freezing until the start of next week.
