Leaf watching enters final peak

If you want to see Indiana's trees at their peak, you should get out and do so this weekend.

INDIANAPOLIS — This might be the last weekend to get out and see Indiana’s colorful leaves before they fall.

Dawn VanDeman loves all things nature.

“It makes me feel things, you know?" VanDeman said.

She works at Eagle Creek Park on Indy’s northwest side, which she said is one of the best places to see leaves in the entire state.

"Beautiful reds and oranges, you need to get out probably this week or weekend to see them," VanDeman said.

And thankfully, we don't have to travel far from Indianapolis to take in the beauty.

Eagle Creek Park is perfect for photography opportunities, walks, running and bringing the dogs on an adventure.

VanDeman gave us a short science lesson on why the leaves change in the first place.

"As the days grow shorter and it gets colder, the chlorophyll starts to break down, and you get yellow leaves," she explained.

But soon, the trees will shake off all these leaves, if they haven't already, to keep from drying out over the winter.

So, you've heard it here. If you want to see the trees at their peak, you should get out and do so this weekend.
