Southbound I-65 reopens after police pursue stolen vehicle on Indy's south side

The interstate was closed just north of the County Line Road exit in southern Marion County.

INDIANAPOLIS — State police closed Interstate 65 southbound in southern Marion County Monday night after the pursuit of a stolen vehicle

The vehicle could be seen on INDOT traffic cameras leading officers on a slow pursuit along I-65 south of Southport Road. The vehicle had thick white smoke coming from it as it rolled onto the shoulder just south of Stop 11 Road. As troopers pulled closer, the vehicle rolled into the ditch off the right side of the interstate.

At that time, state police closed the southbound lanes of the interstate as they dealt with the person inside the vehicle, who remained barricaded inside.

Traffic cameras showed cars being diverted off the interstate at the Southport Road exit, with the backup stretching about a mile to the north.

Around 11:45 p.m., a man emerged from the vehicle and walked slowly back to the interstate, where he was taken into custody.

Shortly after midnight, more than two hours after the interstate was closed, the left lane was reopened to allow traffic to start moving again.
