LOUISVILLE, Ky. — All lanes of a bridge connecting Louisville to southern Indiana are now open to both directions of traffic during weekdays.
Officials announced Thursday that all three lanes on both decks of the Sherman Minton Bridge are open to traffic during daytime hours on weekdays.
“Drivers have patiently awaited this milestone, and we know that full weekday access to the bridge is a relief,” said Danny Corbin, Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) project manager. “Aside from a final daytime bridge inspection in November to conclude the project, drivers should expect three open lanes during their weekday commutes.”
All remaining construction activities requiring blocked lanes will take place on weekends or during overnight hours.
The Sherman Minton Renewal team says the project remains on track to be completed this November. The bridge rehabilitation project is expected to add up to 30 years of life to the 62-year-old bridge.
“We greatly appreciate the public’s patience and support for this major rehabilitation project that will add up to 30 years of life to this vital community connector,” said Royce Meredith, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet project manager.
The Sherman Minton Renewal project is currently in Phase 5, the final phase of construction.
Phase 5 consists of replacing the vertical hanger cables along the exterior of the bridge, replacing lighting, installing the Intelligent Transportation Systems equipment for traffic monitoring, finishing painting and adding permanent striping.
Phase 1 of the Sherman Minton Renewal project first began in September 2022.
