RICHMOND, Ind. — A 46-year-old man driving a scooter was hit and killed by a vehicle Tuesday evening in Richmond.
Wayne County sheriff's officers were called to the 3700 block of Chester Boulevard (U.S. 27), near Interstate 70, shortly before 6 p.m. on a report of a crash.
According to a preliminary investigation, Charles Stephenson, of Richmond, was driving a scooter southbound on U.S. 27 in the driving lane when he was hit from behind by an SUV, driven by 27-year-old Ila Smith, of Winchester.
Smith told officers she did not see the scooter before the crash. A witness told officers the lights on the scooter were working just prior to the crash.
Stephenson was taken to Reid Health Hospital but died from his injuries.
Officers do not believe Smith was impaired, and all preliminary tests were negative.
The crash remains under investigation.
