PENDLETON, Ind. — A person was killed in a crash involving a semi on Interstate 69 in Pendleton early Sunday morning.
According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, around 4:15 a.m. on May 19, emergency crews responded to a crash near exit 214 to Lapel and Fortville. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2020 Volvo semi truck, which was being operated by 26-year-old Piyush Bali, of Canada, was traveling southbound on I-69 when the semi rear-ended a different semi that was also going southbound.
The Volvo semi then rolled over onto its side after disconnecting from its trailer. Medics pronounced Bali dead at the scene. The Volvo was also reportedly carrying a passenger who was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the other semi was uninjured.
The crash closed that portion of I-69 for roughly seven hours while crews worked to clean up the crash and investigate the cause.
