Northbound I-65 closure into South Split back open

Road is back open after construction work limited I-65 traffic into the South Split through the weekend. The road reopened on Sunday.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — I-65 is back open after construction work limit I-65 traffic into the South Split through the weekend. The road reopened on Sunday.

After Friday's rush hour, crews shut down all northbound lanes of I-65 between I-465 and the South Split.

Northbound traffic soon backed up down to County Line Road Friday morning as drivers were forced to exit eastbound or westbound onto I-465 rather than continue northbound on I-65.

The marked detour through the weekend will take traffic west on I-465 toward the airport, then back eastbound on I-70 to the South Split. That trip is expected to take 20 minutes if traffic is moving at the speed limit.

Friday night, only one northbound lane of I-65 will remain open north of Southport Road. The on-ramp from Southport Road to I-65 will also be closed.

Segment 3 of the project covering I-65/I-70 northbound between the splits east of downtown will begin later in May. At least one lane will remain open during that time.

Segment 4 will close I-70 westbound from the south split to Belmont Avenue. All lanes in one direction will be closed for that project, which also is scheduled to begin in May.

Once those segments are done, crews will then begin working on southbound lanes. That work will run from 7 p.m. on Fridays until 3 p.m. on Mondays. The hope is that work will begin in June and run through August.

There are some reprieves. INDOT will not have any closures of those areas during Memorial Day weekend and the travel weekend following July 4.
