North Split project expected to be complete in April 2023, according to INDOT

The construction at the North Split, which was built nearly 50 years ago, is intended to improve safety and remove a daily traffic bottleneck.

INDIANAPOLIS — The end is in sight, according to INDOT.

All work on the North Split project, which has been under construction since the winter of 2020, is expected to be finished by the end of April 2023.

According to INDOT, the reopenings will be in phases, not all at once.

The construction at the North Split, which was built nearly 50 years ago, is intended to improve safety and remove a daily traffic bottleneck.

INDOT said reopening the North Split interchange is dependent upon a number of factors, including colder weather, supply chain delays, and a shortage of skilled workers and truck drivers in delivering materials and supplies.

Here is a timeline of reopenings:

  • Reopened in October: Ramp from Delaware Street to I-70 east
  • Reopened in early November: Ramp from Pine Street to I-70 east
  • Open now: Ramp from I-70 west to Michigan Street
  • Open now: Collector/distributor ramp to Michigan Street
  • Expected to reopen by the end of 2022: Ramp from Rural Street and Keystone Avenue to I-70 west
  • Expected to open by early to mid-January: I-70 lanes
  • Expected to reopen in March or April: Collector/distributor ramp to Ohio Street and Fletcher Avenue
  • Expected to open by the end of April: I-65 lanes

INDOT said its goal is to reopen Ohio Street by Christmas.

Although the project is expected to be complete by the end of April 2023, INDOT will continue aesthetic work and local street paving through the remainder of the year.
