INDIANAPOLIS — North Meridian Street on the north side of Indianapolis will be down to one lane in each direction at times when a spring construction project begins.

The city is spending $8 million to improve the road and drainage along a 3.8-mile stretch from White River Bridge to just south of 96th Street.

Construction begins in the spring and should be completed by the end of the year.

Along with nine new and repaired drainage pipes along Meridian Street, this project will include 19 ADA-compliant curb ramps, and new and upgraded traffic signals.

Crews will also take the opportunity to fix the pavement where it is needed in that area and add sidewalks north of 86th Street.

The stretch of Meridian Street north of 86th Street sees 40,000 vehicles per day, and south of 86th Street sees 30,000 vehicles per day. In three years, there have been 383 crashes in the area, with the improvements from the construction project hoping to decrease the number of crashes.
