WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — West Lafayette police officers are trying to determine what caused a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon.

Police responded to a report of a head-on crash between two vehicles in the eastbound lanes of Sagamore Parkway, just west of the Wabash River bridge, around 4:15 p.m. Dec. 25.

Officers arrived and learned a 32-year-old West Lafayette man was driving a pickup truck westbound and allegedly lost control for an unknown reason, and the truck crossed the center median and hit an eastbound SUV head-on.

Police said a 33-year-old Noblesville woman was driving the SUV, and firefighters had to extricate her from the vehicle. Medics took her to an Indianapolis-area hospital, where she remains in "critical but stable condition," according to police.

Medics also took the woman's husband, a 40-year-old man from Noblesville, to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said he was the passenger in the SUV at the time of the crash.

The Noblesville couple's two dogs were in the car and died in the crash, according to police.

Medics transported the pickup truck driver to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, but the driver underwent a blood draw as standard protocol for crashes involving serious injury or death.

Anyone who may have been driving in the area around the time of the crash is asked to call the West Lafayette Police Department at 765-775-5200.

The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department and Purdue University Police Department assisted in the investigation.
