Nickel Plate Trail construction to close Fall Creek Parkway near Indiana State Fairgrounds for second half of April

Both directions of Fall Creek Parkway North Drive will be closed for more than two weeks.

INDIANAPOLIS — Construction for the Nickel Plate Trail project will prompt the complete closure of a major stretch of road on Indianapolis' north side later this month.

Both directions of Fall Creek Parkway North Drive will be closed at Evanston Avenue, just east of the Indiana State Fairgrounds, from April 15 to April 30, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works announced.

During the closure, crews will fully remove the railroad crossing at the intersection, stretching across Fall Creek Parkway. The road will be patched and a section of the concrete median and curbs will be replaced on each side of the road, Indy DPW said.

The department shared this detour information for those traveling on Fall Creek Parkway:

Northbound:

  • Head west on 38th Street at the intersection of 38th Street and Fall Creek Parkway
  • Turn north on College Avenue
  • Head east on 46th Street
  • Turn south onto Keystone Avenue
  • The detour ends once driver has returned to Fall Creek Parkway

Southbound:

  • Head north onto Keystone Avenue at the intersection of Keystone Avenue and Fall Creek Parkway
  • Turn west on 46th Street
  • Head south on College Avenue
  • Turn east on 38th Street
  • The detour ends once driver has returned to Fall Creek Parkway

Indy DPW shared this map of a detour during construction along Fall Creek Parkway on Indianapolis' north side in April 2024.

"This closure marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to transform the Nickel Plate Railroad bed into a dynamic multi-use trail, spanning from the State Fairgrounds into Hamilton County," Indy DPW said in a statement.

The nearly $15 million project broke ground in late 2023, and work is expected to continue through mid-2025, adding nine miles of trail to the city.
