New York & Michigan streets being converted to 2-way traffic

The project — at a cost of nearly $20 million — will also include sidewalk, curb and ADA ramp improvements.

INDIANAPOLIS — Construction is beginning to convert New York and Michigan streets to two-way traffic between College Avenue and Ellenberger Park.

Indy DPW began the work on Monday, March 11. The city said two-way roads lead to lower speeds by drivers.

“The City of Indianapolis and DPW are redesigning traffic patterns for a safer, more neighborly city,” Mayor Joe Hogsett said. “Once these latest two-way conversions are completed, Michigan and New York streets will allow for safer travel with or without a car, improving neighborhoods for residents and local business.”

The project — at a cost of nearly $20 million — will also include sidewalk, curb and ADA ramp improvements. There will also be crosswalk changes, bus platform enhancements, street resurfacing and protected bike lanes.

During the first week of construction, contractors are expected to close the north side of Michigan Street near Ellenberger Park.

The full project is not expected to be finished until the end of the year.
