INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police troopers are investigating a crash on Interstate 74 that killed a West Virginia woman Monday afternoon.
The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-74 just east of the Acton Road exit. A witness called 911 and reported seeing a vehicle strike the rear of a stopped semi tractor-trailer and roll over several times.
First responders arrived to find a good Samaritan performing CPR on 63-year-old Kathleen Bunyer of Huntington, West Virginia, who was a passenger in the vehicle that struck the semi. Despite life-saving efforts, Bunyer died at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, Bruce Bunyer, was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. An infant inside Bunyer's Ford Expedition was also taken to the hospital to be checked out, but was not seriously injured. Two other adults in the vehicle were not injured.
Investigators believe the rear of the semi was partway in the left lane after an earlier crash with a dump truck. Before police were on the scene of the initial crash, Bunyer struck the back of the trailer and rolled the Expedition over.
Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as a factor in the crash.
The driver of the semi was not injured in the crash, police said, and no one was reportedly injured in the initial crash involving the dump truck.
All lanes of I-74 westbound were closed for more than an hour and, at times, one eastbound lane was closed for emergency equipment. The interstate reopened just before 7 p.m.
