INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police are investigating after a woman was hit and killed by a vehicle on I-465 Wednesday night on Indy's southeast side.
The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. at the 50 mile marker of Interstate 465 westbound, near Emerson Avenue.
Police said preliminary investigation reveals a woman's vehicle had become disabled on the left side of the road on the shoulder. Police believe she walked across all lanes of the interstate for unknown reasons. As she was walking back toward her car, she was struck by a vehicle. Police said after the initial collision, more vehicles hit the woman as she was lying in the road.
Police said the initial vehicle that struck her did not stop at the scene.
Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine confirmed the crash details on Twitter.
The westbound lanes of I-465 reopened around 6 a.m.
The Indianapolis Fire Department, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indiana Department of Transportation and Marion County Coroner's Office assisted with the investigation.
