INDIANAPOLIS — For two weekends in March, traffic will be heavily restricted on Interstate 465 on the southwest side of Indianapolis. The Interstate 69 extension will require widening and rebuilding I-465 eastbound, including a new bridge over the White River.
During the construction of the new bridge and lanes, INDOT crews plan to move all traffic onto the current westbound lanes of I-465 beginning with preliminary work on Friday, March 10, if weather allows.
Crews are planning to work through the weekend of March 10-13, and again March 17-20 to make the switch, subject to change if weather interrupts construction.
During the first weekend, traffic on westbound I-465 between I-65 and I-70 will be limited to a single lane from 8 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday. That will allow crews to shift westbound lanes to the north in preparation for an eastbound switch later in the month.
To reduce traffic volume and conflict points, INDOT plans to close the westbound entrance ramps onto I-465 from I-65 southbound, I-65 northbound, U.S. 31 southbound, U.S. 31 northbound, and S.R 37 (Harding Street). Closures will last from Friday night until early Monday morning starting March 10.
During the second weekend, eastbound I-465 will be restricted to a single lane of traffic from 8 p.m. on Friday, March 17 through 5 a.m. on Monday, March 20. The double lane closure on eastbound I-465 will allow crews to shift all I-465 traffic to what are currently the westbound lanes.
Eastbound entrance ramps to I-465 will close during that weekend from I-70 eastbound, S.R. 67 (Kentucky Avenue), Mann Road, S.R. 37 (Harding Street), U.S. 31 southbound and U.S. 31 northbound.
If weather forces INDOT to delay its planned schedule, the I-69 Finish Line project will post changes on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
I-69 construction update
Johnson County drivers should expect short delays at the Smith Valley Road and S.R. 37 interchange as crews pour concrete for the new bridge deck of the Smith Valley Road overpass during the first week of March. Smith Valley Road is the last bridge deck to be poured over existing S.R. 37 in preparation for the switchover to I-69.
