INDOT announces ramp closures, lane restrictions coming to I-465 southbound on Indy's east side

The closures are expected to begin May 31 and last through the end of June.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced lane and exit ramp closures will be coming to the southbound lanes of Interstate 465 on Indy's east and southeast sides.

According to INDOT, beginning Friday, May 31, crews will begin concrete pavement and bridge deck patching work on a portions of I-465 southbound between Pendleton Pike and Emerson Avenue.

INDOT says that on weekdays, southbound I-465 traffic will be reduced to three lanes between 46th Street and the I-465/I-70 interchange. On weekends, traffic will be reduced to two lanes.

"We see that this work is needed, especially in this area, it carries a lot of weight, a lot of volume and a lot of cars, so we are making sure we are maintaining the road and the life as much as possible," said Kyleigh Cramer, public relations director for INDOT.

INDOT says the following ramps will also be closed:

  • I-70 eastbound and westbound to I-465 southbound (May 31 at 7 p.m.)
  • Washington St./U.S. 40 eastbound and westbound to I-465 southbound (May 31 at 9 a.m.)
  • Brookville Rd./U.S. 52 eastbound and westbound to I-465 southbound (May 31 at 9 a.m.)
  • Shadeland Ave. southbound to I-465 southbound (June 1 at 9 a.m.)
  • Southeastern Ave./Old U.S. 421 to I-465 southbound (June 1 at 9 a.m.)
  • I-74 westbound to I-465 southbound (June 1 at 9 a.m.)
  • Emerson Ave. northbound and southbound to I-465 westbound (June 1 at 9 a.m.)
  • Pendleton Pike eastbound and westbound to I-465 southbound (May 30 at 9 p.m.)

Lane and ramp closures are expected to conclude by the end of June, according to INDOT.

This closure is the second of six parts for I-465 restoration work that will be completed in spring 2025.

Drivers told 13News that they have gotten used to all the construction on I-465 and are ready for this entire project to be over.

"Every day is something new. We are all around Indiana all the time, so we see everything," Tyler Woodson said.

INDOT says the official detour around the work will be to take I-70 westbound onto I-65 southbound.

"We know this is an inconvenience, but we do really appreciate the motor public's patience with us during this time," Cramer said.

INDOT encourages drivers to visit 511in.org for updates in this project, as well as ways to map out their routes.
