Indiana Toll Road warns of text message scams

The ITRCC says if anyone receives a message claiming to be from them that appears suspicious, do not respond to the text or open any link it may contain.

ELKHART, Ind. — The Indiana Toll Road Concession Company (ITRCC) is warning the public about recent text message scams claiming the user has unpaid tolls.

According to the ITR's website, recent phishing/smishing scams have been targeting customers of various toll road agencies. The ITRCC wants to remind its users that it does not send text messages requesting sensitive information.

In the scams, the scammers are sending fraudulent text messages claiming the user has unpaid tolls and urging them to follow a fraudulent link in order to avoid paying stiff late fees.

The ITRCC says if anyone receives a message claiming to be from them that appears suspicious, do not respond to the text or open any link it may contain. E-ZPass holders can contact Customer Service at 574-675-4010 to verify the authenticity of any message.

On the Indiana Toll Road website, it lists steps you can take to report one of these text message scams:

  1. File a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov, and be sure to include:
    • The phone number from where the text originated.
    • The website listed within the text
  2. Check your account using the toll service’s legitimate website.
  3. Contact the toll service’s customer service phone number.
  4. Delete any smishing texts received. If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
