INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to reopen eastbound Interstate 70 through the North Split interchange in downtown Indianapolis this weekend.
Crews are scheduled to begin moving barrels and putting down new pavement markings Friday night. During the process, drivers should plan for multiple short-term lane restrictions.
Access to Washington Street from northbound Interstate 65 will close Friday night to allow crews to remark pavement. Drivers will have to use I-70 westbound until Saturday morning until the new lanes are marked and ready.
Once the new lanes are open, drivers will be able to travel on I-70 from the west side of downtown, through both the South Split and North Split interchanges and access I-70 heading east from downtown.
I-70 traffic heading west through the North Split is expected reopen by the end of January, depending on weather.
Northbound traffic on I-65 traveling through Indianapolis will continue to be detoured along I-465 until late spring of 2023.
Downtown highway access
- I-70 westbound collector/distributor exit ramp to Michigan Street is open now with a 13-ton vehicle weight restriction.
- I-65 northbound to I-70 eastbound exit ramp to Washington Street is also open with a 13-ton weight restriction.
- I-70 westbound to I-65 northbound to the Martin Luther King. Jr./West Street exit is open, but the Meridian/Pennsylvania exit is still closed.
- I-65 southbound exit to Illinois/Meridian Street is open.
