INDIANAPOLIS — Construction crews closed the ramp from northbound Interstate 65 to Meridian and Pennsylvania streets on Monday, Oct. 24.
The closure is part of the ongoing North Split reconstruction project in downtown Indianapolis.
The ramp is expected to reopen by the end of November, weather permitting.
Construction crews will widen part of the bridge near the ramp and replace concrete on the ramp.
Detour options
During the closure, drivers on I-65 north will be redirected to exit at the Martin Luther King Jr. and West street ramp to the west of the closure. Drivers traveling west on Interstate 70 into and through the North Split reconstruction zone should use the left lane of the recently opened flyover bridge to access the MLK/West Street exit.
Drivers traveling through downtown (toward Chicago) should use the middle lane, while drivers exiting to the collector/distributor ramp to Michigan Street to access the east side of downtown Indianapolis should continue to use the far right lane as they do now.
Access to downtown Indianapolis is still available using these exits:
- I-70 westbound collector/distributor ramp exit ramp to Michigan Street (13-ton declared vehicle weight restriction effect)
- I-65 southbound to MLK/West streets
- I-65 southbound to Meridian/Illinois streets
- I-65 northbound to Washington Street (13-ton declared vehicle weight restriction effect)
- All existing ramps on I-70 west of the South Split
The North Split reconstruction project, once complete, is expected to take up a smaller footprint while increasing the walkability of downtown Indianapolis neighborhoods.
The redesigned interchange should improve safety by eliminating weaving and merging traffic flow.
