INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Drivers on the south side of Indianapolis had a few extra headaches heading north through Wednesday's morning commute.
INDOT crews closed the right three northbound lanes of Interstate 65 from just north of the County Line Road exit to north of the Southport Road exit starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday. The on ramps from both eastbound and westbound Southport Road to northbound I-65 were also closed.
The closures are expected to be in effect until 3 p.m. Wednesday.
INDOT warned drivers to expect long delays through the area, and they were right. At 6:45 a.m., backups reached as far back as Main Street in Greenwood.
Alternate routes include U.S. 31/East Street or Madison Avenue to travel north to downtown Indianapolis or Emerson Avenue north to westbound I-465 to get back to I-65 northbound.
The closures were put in place so crews could complete work on repairs to the bridge deck over Little Buck Creek.
