Fatal crash involving dump truck shuts down portion of SR 39 in Boone County

Investigators say a 43-year-old woman crossed the center line and struck a dump truck head on Thursday afternoon.

LEBANON, Ind. — A Thorntown woman was killed in a crash on State Road 39 in Boone County Thursday afternoon. 

Investigators say a pickup truck driven by 43-year-old Nicole Spann of Thorntown was traveling north on SR 39 near County Road 500 South around 2:20 p.m. Thursday. Dispatchers had received calls about Spann driving recklessly before striking a dump truck head-on. 

Spann was pronounced dead at the scene, the Boone County Sheriff's Office said in a release. The driver of the dump truck was taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. 

Investigators do not yet know what caused Spann to leave the northbound lanes, leading to the crash.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. SR 39 was closed for several hours following the crash.

LFD, LPD, BCSO, and BCEMS are currently on the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash located at 500 S. and State Road 39. Please avoid the area.
