GREENFIELD, Ind. — A slippery situation closed streets Wednesday in downtown Greenfield.

The Greenfield Police Department says spilled animal fat has made for slick roads on U.S. 40 and SR 9 right in the middle of downtown, near the Hancock County Courthouse.

"This spill has turned the roadway into an ice skating rink!" Greenfield police posted on Facebook.

Traffic was diverted well away from downtown while crews worked to clean up the spill for more than four hours Wednesday.

Road closures on U.S. 40 and SR 9 were set up about a mile to the north, south and east of downtown, and about a block west of the courthouse.

INDOT and Greenfield police reported the roads were opened around 9:30 p.m. Around the same time, INDOT reported SR 9 was closed in both directions at U.S. 52 in Shelby County due to a spill involving animal fat "in relation to the U.S. 40 (at) SR 9 incident."

There is no word at this time on how the fat spilled into the roadway at either intersection.
