BEECH GROVE, Ind. — The City of Beech Grove is beginning work to improve what it calls a dangerous intersection, thanks to a major investment.
"The longtime street configuration at the intersections of Churchman, Perkins and Southern (avenues) is in the shape of a triangle, creating confusion and contributing to a number of accidents, most recently a two-car crash on May 5," the city said in a statement.
Following a $1.5 million investment from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization, the city is installing a "peanut roundabout," which is designed to keep traffic flowing without realigning streets.
The project also received roughly $450,000 from the City of Beech Grove.
"We are so grateful to the Indianapolis MPO for being a key part of the solution to fixing a dangerous intersection that stands to make our city and the people who live here safer,” Beech Grove Mayor James Coffman said in a statement.
Street closures begin May 13. The city has not said which roads in the area will be closed, but officials urged drivers to follow detour signage.
The city says the project is scheduled to be completed this summer.
