CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind — The city of Crawfordsville is filing a lawsuit to stop CSX from closing the crossing in the 400 block of East Market Street.
CSX was looking to close the crossing for maintenance work. The city said 13,000 vehicles move through that area daily coming from US 136, SR 32 and SR 47.
Traffic is normally rerouted to Wabash Avenue, where there is a bridge over the railway, but that bridge is being rebuilt and won't open until mid-August. That would leave Main Street, which is in a residential area and has limited capacity, and Elmore Street which the city said is plagued by frequently stopped trains on the crossing.
The city, in a release, claims it has tried to work with CSX to wait until mid-August when the Wabash Avenue bridge work is finished. The city said it has exhausted all other options except legal.
13News has reached out to CSX about the lawsuit and claims by the city of Crawfordsville and is waiting on a response.
