JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind — Two people were killed and a third person was injured in a single-car crash on Interstate 65 in Johnson County Sunday morning.
Around 9:30 a.m. April 7, first responders were called to the crash along northbound I-65 near the 96 mile-marker, not far from Whiteland.
Indiana State Police troopers found two unresponsive female passengers inside a car, along with a "conscious and alert" driver, police said.
Cearmease Evans, 52, and Chaise Franklin, 17, both from Chicago, were pronounced dead at the scene and later identified by the Johnson County coroner.
The driver was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.
A preliminary investigation indicated a Jeep drove off the right side of the road into the ditch and then struck several trees.
A state police spokesperson said investigators were still working to determine why the Jeep drove off the road.
The right two lanes of I-65 were blocked for several hours during the investigation.
