46-year-old man killed after running across I-65, getting hit by SUV on Indy's south side

Authorities said they are not certain where the man was coming from or going.

INDIANAPOLIS — A man was killed after running across Interstate 65 and getting hit by a car Monday morning on Indy's south side.

Just before 9 a.m. Aug. 12, Indiana State Police dispatchers started getting 911 calls about a serious crash involving a pedestrian on I-65, near the 107 mile marker.

When IFD and ISP arrived, they said they found a man unresponsive lying in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, Aug. 13, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man as 46-year-old Ryan Matthew McKelvey.

ISP said the man was trying to run across the interstate, and several vehicles had to take "evasive action" to avoid hitting him.

The driver of a Kia SUV ended up hitting the man. Police said that driver stayed on the scene and, per state law, submitted to a blood draw. For the driver, ISP confirmed neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in this crash.
