HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — Police are investigating after a man lying on U.S. 40 was struck by a Hancock County sheriff's deputy's car Thursday morning. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Around 4 a.m. Jan. 25, deputies with the Hancock County Sheriff's Office and officers with the Cumberland Police Department responded to a report of a person lying in the road somewhere near U.S. 40 and County Road 600 West (Mt. Comfort Road).
Police were searching the area when the person, lying on U.S. 40 around a half-mile east of 600 West, was struck by a deputy's car.
A 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hancock County Sheriff's Office said he was wearing dark clothing at the time. He was later identified as Luwi Conrad Edmeade of Greenfield.
The sheriff's office has not said whether it believes Edmeade was dead prior to being struck by the deputy.
The Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team is investigating the crash, and the New Palestine Police Department is the lead agency on the investigation, the sheriff's office said.
All lanes of U.S. 40 between County Road 600 West and County Road 500 West were blocked for a few hours early Thursday, but had fully reopened by 7 a.m.
