SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana State Police and Shelby County sheriff's deputies are investigating a deadly crash that happened on Interstate 74 Monday afternoon.
The crash involving a charter bus and another vehicle was reported shortly after 2 p.m. May 13.
An ISP spokesperson said their preliminary investigation determined 52-year-old Jason Huber, of Boggstown, Indiana, was driving eastbound on I-74 when his van crashed into the back of a stopped bus. It's not clear what caused traffic to back up and stop in that area.
The eastbound lanes of I-74 were closed for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and the wrecked vehicles were removed.
A spokesperson for Major Hospital in Shelbyville said nine people were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries from the crash. ISP said none of those injuries were serious.
13 Investigates has learned the bus is owned by STL Crew Shuttle LLC, which is out of St. Charles, Missouri. It has six buses and 13 drivers as of February. Federal records do not show any crashes in the last two years.
13News spoke to the co-owner of STL Crew Shuttle LLC, who said 49 people were on the bus at the time of the crash. The driver and six passengers were taken to the hospital.
The bus was heading from Springfield, Illinois to Cincinnati, and the company is partnering with a local charter company to continue the trip.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
