Major construction project coming to southwest Indianapolis highways

INDOT says this first closure will be between I-65 and I-70 on the southwest side.

INDIANA, USA — Just when you thought there couldn't be more construction on Indiana highways

"We are going to first shut down I-465 eastbound direction during the month of June, from June 2 to June 21," said Kyleigh Cramer with INDOT.

INDOT said this first closure will be between I-65 and I-70 on the southwest side.

It's part of the I-69 Finish Line project. It's a major project that could cause major headaches for drivers.

If drivers want to get back on 465 east, they'll have to detour, taking I-70 east to I-65 south in the South Split.

Five eastbound ramps will also be closed to traffic, including:

• I-70 westbound to I-465 eastbound
• Kentucky Avenue/ S.R. 67 to I-465 eastbound
• Mann Road to I-465 eastbound
• Harding Street/S.R. 37 to I-465 eastbound
• US 31/East Street to I-465 eastbound

"Crews will be working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, hundreds of crews on site," said Natalie Garrett with INDOT.

Crews will be completing pavement and bridge work, building sound barriers and more.

Once the eastbound lanes are done, the focus shifts.

"We're going to give it a break during the 4th of July weekend and then we're going to come back for the westbound side of I-465," said Cramer.

This time from July 7 to July 29. I-465 west will be closed between I-65 and I-70. Drivers should plan to detour on I-65 north to I-70 west in the South Split.

The following four ramps will be inaccessible to drivers:

• I-65 to I-465 westbound
• US 31/East Street to I-465 westbound
• Harding Street/S.R. 37 to I-465 westbound
• Kentucky Avenue/S.R. 67 to I-465 westbound

"Our team has probably looked at several different ways we could shut down 465 and different routes we could go about this, but safety issues is mostly just making sure that at the end of the day people go home the way that they came to work, so this is the best route that we found for ourselves," said Cramer.

That route is set to begin June 2. INDOT encourages drivers to map out your route now and plan for longer commutes.

Drivers can also use the Traffic Wise app.
