Northwest Indiana woman dead after fiery crash on I-465 involving semi

Traffic officials said the right four lanes of the interstate were closed for several hours.

INDIANAPOLIS — A northwest Indiana woman was killed in a fiery crash involving a semi on Interstate 465 on Indianapolis' east side early Sunday morning.

According to a release from Indiana State Police, the crash happened shortly before 7 a.m. Sept. 22 on northbound I-465 just north of I-70. Several 911 callers reportedly said a car had rear-ended a semi and had caught fire after becoming wedged under the semi's trailer.

Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department arrived to extinguish the fire and search for any victims. Police say only one person was found during the search. The driver of the semi was uninjured.

The one victim found was the driver of a 2022 Chevrolet Corvette. Indiana State Police said the victim had been identified as 29-year-old Alexis Hollins of Merrillville, Indiana, which is roughly 40 miles southeast of Chicago.

A preliminary investigation showed that Hollins was driving on northbound I-465 in the left lane when she suddenly crossed all lanes of traffic. Investigators believe Hollins possibly lost control of her vehicle.

Hollins then struck the rear of a semi that had stopped on the right-hand shoulder. The force of the impact reportedly caused the Corvette to go completely under the back of the trailer before going up in flames. Investigators believe high speed contributed to the crash.
