I hit a pothole. What should I do next?

When you hit a pothole, there are two main steps to take. Report it, then check and see if you qualify for reimbursement.

INDIANAPOLIS — It's official - we have entered a new season in Indiana. While we certainly wish it were spring, Angela says that's not so at least for a few more weeks.

We're talking about pothole season.

Last week, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works asked residents to report potholes whenever they see them on their commutes. But that may not be something you want to do in the name of being a good citizen.

You may have indeed hit one of the many thousands of potholes across our city.

If you do hit a pothole in Indianapolis, you'll want to log onto this website. We recommend doing this task on mobile, as there is an interactive map toggle that works more quickly on a smartphone.

Once you get to that website, you will come to this page. Hit Get Started.

From there, you will be able to choose what type of pothole you encountered and indicate where it was on the road. You also need to put in an incident address. Use the toggle to find where the pothole was located.

You will fill out a questionnaire about what type of damage was caused. You may also need to submit a tort claim if you were injured. If you do file a tort claim, don't hold your breath for payment. Marion County pays out very few claims.

You must prove they knew about the pothole, but didn't fix it in a "reasonable" amount of time.

As for what's considered reasonable, that is up to people who pay the claim.

A tool that could help you dodge the pothole situation is the Indy Pothole Viewer, so you can avoid certain roads altogether.

More than 4,000 potholes were reported as needing patched as of noon Feb. 21.
