INDIANAPOLIS — TV's, computers, laptops, cell phones...do you dump these items into the trash?
You may have a pile of old or broken electronics in your home and are not sure what to do with them. In this edition of Going Green, you'll learn what you can do with those electronics and how one company is keeping those devices out of landfills.
"These items do not need to go into the landfill. They are very dangerous," said Dale Needleman, partner of Technology Recyclers.
Last year, Technology Recyclers collected 7.2 million pounds of electronics, including steel, aluminum, copper, brass – even precious metals like gold, silver, platinum and palladium.
"Recycling for us includes checking those items in, inventorying them and then destroying them. We tear them apart. We stick them in our shredder, we separate the materials," Needleman said. "And we find homes for all those primary materials. We have the designation of being 100% landfill free."
We followed the electronics through the recycling process to see what happens when you get rid of your old stuff.
Not only is it the state law to recycle your electronics, but with Technology Recyclers, you can actually do it for free for your home and business.
"We're now teaching people to recycle every electronic, every wire, every cable, every battery, anything that comes in that box when you buy your new computer. But there's a second piece – we can save the Earth," Needleman said.
Located near East Washington Street and South Fenton Avenue on Indianapolis' east side, Technology Recyclers also guarantees data destruction.
