INDIANAPOLIS — Crime scene after crime scene in Indianapolis. In Marion County, there have been more than 200 homicides this year.
It often leaves communities frustrated and fed up with gun violence.
"What if we had gunshot technology to actually alarm or alert our public safety?" said Austin Smith, CEO of Watchman Security in Indianapolis.
Smith says his company is using gun detection software powered by artificial intelligence. The goal is to intercept crime before it happens.
Smith gave 13News a demonstration of how the software works. He showed a man carrying a fake 9mm handgun as the gun detection system zeros in on the weapon.
"That's how the alarm will come across in our command, and then this is him going to different places around the facility and here are the pins of every time AI detects where that person is at," said Smith.
Smith says the AI technology doesn't use face recognition.
"The thing about artificial intelligence is making sure that it's being used properly. We are not Big Brother," said Smith.
It's technology that can help make the streets of Indianapolis and beyond safer.
"We're talking about folks taking their weapon out of their holster, an alarm will go off and a geo-pin will be dropped off where that individual is," said Smith.
