Hi, Barbie! Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird honored with signature doll

The doll is now available for purchase on Mattel's website.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — WNBA great Sue Bird has been honored with a signature Barbie doll.

Mattel announced Tuesday the collectible tribute doll was modeled for Bird, who is a "basketball legend who pioneered the way for growth in the women’s league with her record-breaking legacy and courageous voice that forever changed the game.”

The doll is dressed in a No. 10 jersey, Bird’s number in the WNBA. The Barbie is made to move, has Bird's signature curly brown hair and comes with a basketball.

The doll is part of Mattel's Role Model series as the company celebrates' Barbie's 65th anniversary and the company's summer of sports initiative. Other recent dolls in the Role Model series include actress and artist Viola Davis, superstar Shania Twain, actress and advocate Helen Mirren and award-winning singer Kylie Minogue.

"One of the most decorated players in the history of the sport, Bird is known for her fierce drive to win, egoless leadership, and clutch shots. On and off the court, she champions for equality and social justice," the back of the Barbie's box reads.

The Barbie is now being sold for $30, but it is currently only being sold to members. A one-year Barbie Signature Membership can be added for $10 at checkout.

UConn, where Bird won two national championships in college, posted a photo of her smiling while holding her Barbie.

Bird, 43, retired in 2022 after 21 seasons in the WNBA, all with the Seattle Storm. She helped the storm to four championships and was part of five U.S. national teams that won a gold medal, the last coming in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics. She's now a part owner of the Storm. 

Bird also co-founded TOGETHXR, a media company that aims to amplify women's voices, alongside soccer star Alex Morgan, snowboarder and Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim and swimmer and Olympian Simone Manuel.
