Fever clinch first playoff berth since 2016 with Sky, Dream losses

The Fever clinched a spot in the WNBA playoffs on their day off, after Chicago and Atlanta lost road games Tuesday night.

INDIANAPOLIS โ€” For the first time in eight years, the Indiana Fever are heading to the playoffs.

The Fever clinched a spot in the WNBA playoffs on their day off, after Chicago and Atlanta lost road games Tuesday night. The losses mean Indiana, currently sixth in the WNBA standings, can finish no lower than eighth, the final spot in the postseason bracket.

The playoff appearance will be the Fever's 14th in franchise history and first since 2016. The team won the WNBA title in 2012 and reached the finals in 2009 and 2015.

The Fever have been on a tear since the WNBA returned from its Olympic break, going 6-1, while averaging 91.1 points per game.

Indiana will play their next six games at home before finishing the regular season on the road in Washington. That homestand starts Wednesday night against Los Angeles, in a game that can be seen live on MeTV (Channel 13.3 or 46.1).

WNBA playoffs

While the Fever's spot in the playoffs is clinched, there is still plenty to play for.

The top four teams in the league, regardless of conference, will host a first-round playoff series. The best-of-3 series will start with two games at the team with the better record.

After Tuesday's games, the Fever sit in sixth place and would face the Minnesota Lynx in the first round. But Indiana is just 2 1/2 games behind fifth-place Seattle Storm and four games behind Las Vegas Aces for fourth place, which would secure home-court advantage in the first round.

Indiana will host the Aces for two games on Sept. 11 and 13, which could have playoff seeding implications for both teams.

The playoffs will begin Sept. 22.
