KENNESAW, Ga. — Indy Eleven made history on two fronts Tuesday night as they reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup.
Indy defeated MLS team Atlanta United, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals for the first time. The team has competed in the U.S. Open Cup since 2014.
It also marked Indy's first-ever win over an MLS team in four tries.
Augi Williams opened the scoring for Indy, putting the visitors up 1-0 in the 31st minute. Douglas Martinez assisted on the goal, Williams' third of the tournament.
Another Williams touch put Indy up 2-0 in the 83rd minute, when his crossing attempt to Elliot Collier was deflected into the Atlanta net for an own goal.
Nick Firmino scored in injury time for Atlanta, but Indy held on for the 2-1 win.
Indy will face Sporting Kansas City on Aug. 27 in Kansas City. The U.S. Open Cup final is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 25.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest ongoing national soccer tournament in the United States and the third-longest in the world. The tournament has been held every year since 1914, with the exception of 2020 and 2021, when it was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This year, 96 amateur and professional teams entered the single-game, knockout-style tournament this year. The tournament got underway in March, with Indy joining the bracket in the third round.
Indy had defeated Chicago Fire FC II of the MLS NEXT Pro division, as well as USL Championship rivals San Antonio FC and Detroit FC before knocking off Atlanta on Tuesday night.
