WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WTHR) - Purdue women's basketball coach Sharon Versyp is facing a much bigger challenge than the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Versyp announced Monday she has been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, a form of breast cancer. A statement from Purdue said Versyp is still discussing treatment options with her doctors, but is "very encouraged with the prognosis."

"I feel incredibly blessed to have caught this in its earliest stages, and cannot stress enough the importance of regular screenings and mammograms," Versyp said in a statement released by Purdue University. "With an incredible support group around me from my family, my staff and our Purdue community, I know that I'll beat this and come back stronger."

Versyp is in her eleventh season with the Boilermakers, who fell to Maryland in the Big Ten women's championship game Sunday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The team now waits to see if they'll be selected for the NCAA Tournament or the Women's NIT. The coach says she plans to keep coaching through the postseason.
