FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A pair of Hoosier siblings are taking their shot at the Olympics at the U.S. Swim Trials in Indianapolis.
Tristan and Mya DeWitt of Fort Wayne have been swimming since they were little and now compete for Indiana University.
But this week, their sights are set even higher - the Summer Olympics in Paris.
The brother and sister swam on the same team until Tristan graduated from Carroll High School and joined IU's swim team.
"Two years that they weren't on the same swim team were definitely difficult years, I would say, for the both of them," said their mother, Amy.
But when Mya graduated in 2022, she joined her big brother in Bloomington to continue her swimming career.
"You know, he might have gotten sick of me, but that's OK," she said.
The siblings developed an inseparable bond through swimming and continued to support one another.
"It really allowed, I hope, my help ... I really helped you when it came to trials and tribulations of practices and even some of the, you know, meet intensity at this level," Tristan said.
This will be Tristan's second year competing in the U.S. Swim Trials.
"This is, like, the victory lap, I guess you can say for me," he said.
"I guess you can say for both of them to compete at this high level together is truly once in a lifetime," Amy DeWitt said.
Their parents are proud of Tristan and Mya's athletic accomplishments, but are even more proud of how supportive they have been of one another.
"I think it is like one of the most special things in the world and I'll get emotional," their mother said.
"The kids are really close and having them be each other's support structure is great and it just makes me really, really happy that both the kids are so close," said their father, Jonathan.
Tristan swims Sunday, June 16 in the 400-meter individual medley and Saturday, June 22 in the 1,500-meter freestyle. Mya will swim in the 200-meter backstroke heats at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 20.
