PARIS, France — The Paris 2024 Olympics are underway in France, and Hoosier athletes are already competing to represent Team USA. In fact, the first two medals the United States won came from Indiana athletes.
Here is how the athletes with Indiana connections did on Tuesday, Aug. 6:
Andrew Capobianco
Andrew Capobianco, who graduated from Indiana University, is competing in the 3m springboard diving event.
Capobianco advanced to the semifinal with a score of 382.05 in the preliminary round, which was 15th best.
The semifinal is scheduled for 4 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 7. The event will be available to stream on Peacock.
Capobianco previously won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the synchronized 3m springboard diving event.
Carson Tyler
Indiana University student Carson Tyler is competing in the 3m springboard diving event.
Tyler advanced to the semifinal with a score of 389.80 in the preliminary round, which was 10th best.
The semifinal is scheduled for 4 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 7. The event will be available to stream on Peacock.
Sarah Hildebrandt
Granger, Indiana native Sarah Hildebrandt is competing in the women's freestyle 50kg wrestling event.
In the round 16, Hildebrant defeated Algeria's Ibtissem Doudou 10-0.
In the quarterfinals, Hildebrandt defeated China's Feng Ziqi 7-4.
In the semifinals, Hildebrandt defeated Mongolia's Otgonjargal Dolgorjav 5-0.
She will face India's Vinesh Phogat in the final on Wednesday, Aug. 7 in the 15th event on Mat B in the afternoon session. The event will be available to stream on Peacock.
Hildebrandt previously won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the freestyle 50kg wrestling event.
Annie Drews
Annie Drews, who was born in Muncie, is from Elkhart and went to Purdue University, is once again part of the U.S. women's volleyball team.
The U.S. defeated Poland in the quarterfinals in three sets: 25-22, 25-14, 25-20. Drews led the team with 13 points.
The semifinals of women's volleyball begin at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 8. The match will be available to stream on Peacock.
The U.S. went 2-1 in pool play, losing to China in five sets, beating Serbia in five sets and beating France in three sets.
Drews won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as part of the U.S. women's volleyball team.
Chloé Dygert
Brownsburg's Chloé Dygert is competing in multiple biking events on the track and road courses.
In the qualifying round of team pursuit on the track, the U.S. finished second with a time of 4:05.238 — an average of 58.718 kilometers per hour. Their time was 0.559 seconds behind New Zealand.
The U.S. will now face Great Britain in the third heat, with the heats starting at 7:52 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 7. The event will be available to stream on Peacock.
The winners of heats 3 and 4 will race for the gold and silver medals that same day at 1:28 p.m. ET. The event will be available to stream on Peacock.
Dygert won a bronze medal Saturday, July 27 in the road cycling individual time trial. The 27-year-old crashed on the course, which was wet with rain. Despite the fall, Dygert finished less than a second behind the silver medalist Anna Henderson, of Great Britain. Australia's Grace Brown took home the gold.
Dygert experienced muscle spasms after the race and had to be assisted through the mixed zone, where athletes are interviewed after events.
In the road race on Sunday, Aug. 4, Dygert finished 15th with a time of 4:03:03, which was 3 minutes, 18 seconds behind the bronze medalist. American Kristen Faulkner won the gold medal with a time of 3:59:23.
She previously won a silver medal in 2016 and a bronze medal in 2020, both in the women's team pursuit track event.
Andrew Nembhard
Indiana Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard represented Canada at the Olympics.
Canada lost to France in the quarterfinals of men's basketball 82-73, eliminating the Canadians from the competition. Nembhard played 15 minutes but did not score.
Canada went undefeated in group play, beating Greece 86-79, Australia 93-83 and Spain 88-85.
Trey Lyles
Trey Lyles, who grew up in Indianapolis and went to Arsenal Tech High School, is representing Canada at the Olympics.
Canada lost to France in the quarterfinals of men's basketball 82-73, eliminating the Canadians from the competition. Nembhard played 12 minutes and scored 2 points.
Canada went undefeated in group play, beating Greece 86-79, Australia 93-83 and Spain 88-85.
Cole Hocker
Indianapolis native and Cathedral High School graduate Cole Hocker competed in the 1500m run.
Hocker won the gold medal in the 1500m run with a time of 3:27.65, setting an Olympic record.
On Friday, Aug. 2, Hocker finished second in his heat Friday, Aug. 2 with a time of 3:35.27, which was .06 seconds behind the winner of the heat.
On Sunday, Aug. 4, Hocker finished third in the first semifinal with a time of 3:32.54, advancing to the final.
Yared Nuguse
University of Notre Dame graduate Yared Nuguse competed in the 1500m run.
Nuguse won the bronze medal with a time of 3:27.80, setting his personal best time. He was 0.15 seconds behind the gold medalist, U.S.'s Cole Hocker.
On Friday, Aug. 2, Nuguse finished fifth in his heat with a time of 3:36.56, which was 0.73 seconds behind the winner of the heat.
On Sunday, Aug. 4, Nuguse finished first in the second semifinal with a time of 3:31.72, advancing to the final.
Tyrese Haliburton
Indiana Pacers' All-Star Tyrese Haliburton is part of the U.S. men's basketball team.
The U.S. beat Brazil in the quarterfinals 122-87. Haliburton played 8 minutes and scored 2 points.
The semifinals are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 8.
The U.S. went undefeated in group play, beating Serbia 110-84, South Sudan 103-86 and Puerto Rico 104-83.
