Paris Olympics | Hoosier athletes to watch on Thursday, Aug. 8

Dozens of Olympians have Indiana connections. Here are the results of their competitions on Thursday, Aug. 8.

PARIS, France — The Paris 2024 Olympics are underway in France, and Hoosier athletes are already competing to represent Team USA. In fact, the first two medals the United States won came from Indiana athletes.

Here is how the athletes with Indiana connections did on Thursday, Aug. 8:

Mariah Denigan

Indiana University student Mariah Denigan competed in the women's 10km swimming event.

Denigan finished 16th with a time of 2:06:42.9, which was 3:08.7 behind gold medalist Sharon van Rouwendaal, of the Netherlands.

Carson Tyler

Indiana University student Carson Tyler competed in the 3m springboard diving event.

In the final, Tyler finished fourth with a score of 429.25, which was 71.15 points behind the bronze medalist. China's Siyi Xie won the gold medal with a score of 543.60.

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, Tyler advanced to the semifinal with a score of 389.80 in the preliminary round, which was 10th best.

In the semifinal on Wednesday, Aug. 7, Tyler scored 438.00, which was the seventh highest and advanced him to the final.

Tyler will also compete in the 10m platform diving event, with the preliminary round scheduled to begin at 4 a.m. ET on Friday, Aug. 9.

Annie Drews

Annie Drews, who was born in Muncie, is from Elkhart and went to Purdue University, is once again part of the U.S. women's volleyball team.

The U.S. defeated Brazil in the semifinals in five sets: 25-23, 18-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11. Drews had 18 points for Team USA.

The gold medal women's volleyball match is scheduled for 7 a.m. ET Sunday, Aug. 11. The U.S. awaits the winner between Turkey and Italy. The match will air on WTHR and be available to stream on Peacock.

The U.S. went 2-1 in pool play, losing to China in five sets, beating Serbia in five sets and beating France in three sets.

The U.S. then defeated Poland in the quarterfinals in three sets: 25-22, 25-14, 25-20. Drews led the team with 13 points.

Drews won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as part of the U.S. women's volleyball team.

Tyrese Haliburton

Indiana Pacers' All-Star Tyrese Haliburton is part of the U.S. men's basketball team.

The U.S. came back to beat Serbia 95-91 in the semifinals. Haliburton did not play in the game.

The Americans will face France in the gold medal game on Saturday, Aug. 10. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. ET, and the game will air on WTHR and be available to stream on Peacock.

The U.S. went undefeated in group play, beating Serbia 110-84, South Sudan 103-86 and Puerto Rico 104-83.

The U.S. then beat Brazil in the quarterfinals 122-87. Haliburton played 8 minutes and scored 2 points.
